Guest Speakers 22nd July: Ali Thwaites and Simon Dickson of Oaktree Foundation

ali_thwaites_simon_dickson_20100722 Our guest speakers last meeting, Ali Thwaites and Simon Dickson of the Oaktree Foundation provided us with an insight into their experiences and ambitions participating in the fight to end global poverty. Significantly, while both quite young, they recognise that empowerment of the disadvantaged comes from a mixture of education and business initiatives in communities where opportunities for careers are virtually non-existent

The Oaktree Foundation has been uniting young people to work together to end global poverty. Over the years Oaktree has created and implemented initiatives and projects to raise awareness, educate, empower and motivate communities to improve their future.

Ali and Simon stressed that as young people, they were not selling answers rather providing support, enthusiasm and a means of connecting capabilities and solutions tailored to people and communities in need. Their focus is youth education. For older persons in the communities, concentration on steady growth of skills and business development are seen as the key to sustainability.

Ali and Simon are interested in providing assistance in east Timor. An country area our club is already supporting.

Ali and Simon, together with John Little are investigating how Rotary might assist with fund raising through a gala dinner associated with the October Stomp. This idea is in the feasibility stage and John will bring forward details once a business case has been developed.  Notes: Vincent Mahoney, photo: Stephen McMillan

    VIP List

A proposal was put to the board by Clayton Perry at the meeting of 20th July to establish a standing list of invitees to our special functions like the Stomps.

The board thought this was a fabulous idea and should be implemented.

If you personally know of anyone who ought to be included in such a list, eg past members, politicians, astronauts, film stars, please send their name, email and postal address to the bulletin editor (peter @ canberradance.com).

Your proposal will be put to the board for consideration.
